DEFEKTRO is a Japanese noise unit formed in Tokyo in 1995, primarily characterized by rhythmic noise and experimental electronic sounds. It started as a sound performance project under Lastgasp Art Laboratories (L.A.L.), with full activities beginning in 1996. Their trademark is harsh, machine-generated junk metal sounds, custom-built noise instruments and "sonic weapon" device. Live performances feature destructive acoustics through sampling and improvised operations.
Historically, from 1995, it developed as L.A.L.'s sound division, with the first releases in 1998 (K7 tapes "MECHANIZE" and "NOISE BOMB"). Since then, over 30 works have been released on domestic and international labels.
Internationally, they toured the US in 2000, Australia in 2003, Europe (Turkey, France, Germany, etc.) in 2007, Japan in 2009, and revisited Europe (Switzerland, France, Belgium, etc.) in 2017. Their performances emphasize interactive body sensations, and they've provided soundtrack for animation, participated in the theater group Branch Nebula, and appeared at festivals like Sound Unsound and LUFF.
DEFEKTRO represents Japan's noise scene and continues to influence internationally.
